Missing by Everything But The Girl

Missing by Everything But The Girl
This week’s banger takes us back to the ‘90s with “Missing” by Everything But The Girl — a track that’s both haunting and irresistibly danceable.

I first heard this song back in the 90s when I was a child, probably about 5 or 6 years old. My parents both love music and let my sister and I listen to the radio every time we were in the car. We would use cassette tapes to record our favorite songs from the radio so we could listen to them again and again. This was before CDs became popular.

What starts as a mellow, emotional song blossoms into a club-ready anthem thanks to that unforgettable Todd Terry remix, blending melancholy and groove in perfect harmony.

Tracey Thorn’s vocals are pure emotion, carrying a longing that hits straight to the heart. I always imagined this song to be like she's on a city bus, headphones on, and then everyday the bus takes her past her ex-lover's place and she has a hard time letting them go.

These lyrics hit hard for me:

Could you be dead?

You always were two steps ahead of everyone

We'd walk behind while you would run...

The beat pulses underneath, subtle but hypnotic, giving the track that timeless energy that makes you want to both sit back and feel every lyric, or get up and shake it at the same time.

It’s one of those songs that transcends eras. You’ll find yourself singing along while your foot taps, realizing that even decades later, the magic hasn’t faded. “Missing” is proof that a song can be tender, raw, and absolutely infectious all at once.

This week’s banger is a classic for a reason. Do you agree? Let me know what you think and stay tuned for next week's Weekly Banger! 🤙
